Skills worth building now
Choose useful skills and turn small learning steps into evidence of your ability.
Let the work guide your learning
Look at several genuine vacancies for the kind of role you want. Note the tools and tasks that appear repeatedly, then choose one skill that matches your interests and current level. This is more useful than collecting unrelated certificates.
Build a dependable foundation
Clear written communication, organised record-keeping and confidence with everyday digital tools can support many roles. Practise writing a concise work email, organising a spreadsheet or explaining a process so another person can follow it. Choose exercises relevant to your field.
Create something you can show
Apply what you learn to a small project: a sample budget, a customer-service response guide, a design portfolio or a simple website. Use fictional or public data, not confidential information from an employer. Keep a short explanation of what you made and what you learned.
Describe your level honestly
On your CV, distinguish between a skill you are learning and one you use confidently at work. Link to relevant work samples when appropriate. Review your progress regularly and ask for feedback before moving to the next skill.
